Supper House Group Show:We Keep Going Around In Circles And We Never Know Why Until We Break Them All
The garment affixed to the curtain is a visual representation of a dynamic process, always an outward display of our inner dressing choices, in a domestic setting, where we make daily choices about what to wear before stepping outside. Simultaneously, a dichotomy exists between informal and formal, Western and Eastern attire, traditional and contemporary styles and many more. These boundaries are, at times, fluid and seamless as we unconsciously adhere to an unspoken social contract through our clothing choices.
The design of the garment draws inspiration from diverse sources, including military uniforms (with medallion-like buttons and padded shoulder boards), casual blazers and shirts, and traditional Chinese attire. This amalgamation challenges the rigid norms of dress, celebrating diversity and blending cultures in an era marked by post-contemporary fragmentation of information.
Crafted from a two-layer construction of stitching and slashing, the garment is repurposed from canvas tote bags. Audiences are encouraged to cut through the outer layer, revealing hidden messages. These messages shed light on the academic and social life of the University community in Singapore.
